How we do what we do

The challenge of the design process is that is is a beautiful mix of science and art. There are some parts of the design process that should be universal - such as evaluating what needs are to be met through the artifact being designed. Other parts of the design process are driven more by intuition and personal preference. Some designers lean too heavily on the scientific part of the design process while others lean heavily on the artistic/expressive elements of design. We don't claim to be unique in our efforts to balance the two different aspects of the process, but we are very conscious of the balancing that must take place to consistently produce well designed artifacts.
Our first task is to recognize the uniqueness of each situation as we start the design of any given project. We strive to play to the existing strengths of the situation. We also hope to avoid becoming formulaic in our approaches to problems that have similarities even as we apply what we have learned from previous situations.
